HANDLE HARD

This is worth a share every year. We are working to raise kids that handle hard better. Kids that grow up to be adults who face obstacles head on, push through difficult times and don't give up. People who see a goal and instead of giving up on that goal just because the path is difficult- decide the goal is worth the fight. I always tell the kids that every things is "figureoutable" if we are willing to put in the work together.

Coach John Wooden calls this intentness. He says that intentness is being determined to reach a realistic objective. He states that good things take time- at time you will come against obstacles and adversity, but those trials leave you stronger and better than before. Coach Wooden says that intentness is "patience with purpose." I love that. Working hard over a long period of time (like a cheer season) for a goal (perfecting a routine and skills within) leads to strengthening of the mind, body and a higher level of resolve (or grit).

Talk to your kids at home about this. When they're having a hard week (and they will) ask them what their goals are. Help them break it down into smaller goals or milestones along the way that lead to the bigger goal. Encourage them to put in the work they need to get there. Encourage them to SHOW UP each day as the version of themselves who is GOING to achieve that goal. Teach them to seek constructive feedback (ask your coach "what can I do to get better," or "where do I need to put in more effort/work?"). Encourage them to view corrections as valuable feedback and a tool they can use for their own benefit to improve (I try to ask my kids "what is the best correction your coach gave you today" and "how did you use that to get better?"). So much of their mental resolve and how they view things can be built (or destroyed) in the car ride home or at the dinner table.

90% of success in life is mindset. It's being willing to work hard over a long period of time for a singular, worthwhile goal. That's why I love All Star Cheer. There are kids who put so many years into this journey. The ability to push through hard seasons, mental roadblocks, physical setbacks and other obstacles builds adults who have grit- determination, persistence and perseverance. Those are going to be the adults who have enough grit to make it through college or even graduate school programs. Adults who don't give up when things get hard- who know how to stay the course and adjust. Adults who have the confidence and resolve to fight through any problem or difficult road in life.

Thank you for letting us play a part in raising the next generation of incredible humans! ❤
